Description

Equal parts research and recreation, Jean Rouch films are the provocative prototype for the nouvelle vague movement — free, on-the-fly studies using an uninhibited, handheld camera as curious caméra-stylo. An anthropologist-as-filmmaker by heart, his cinema-verité fancy aimed to capture, as his sociologist colleague Edgar Morin wrote, "both reality and the problematic nature of reality-via-camera." His frames are full of direct (and directed) discovery of his primary ethnographic engagement — Africa and its people — and of mod mademoiselles and lonely, short-sleeved men.
